On November 16th, the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation Conference unfolded at the Hilton Hotel in Malta, drawing international industry leaders and experts. Representing Interserv at this pivotal event was Steve Muscat Azzopardi, the company’s Head of Corporate Services.

The focal point of discussions revolved around the implementation of MiCA, the EU’s regulatory framework for crypto-assets, and the potential challenges jurisdictions might encounter in this transitional period.

Insights from the Conference

Hosted by the MFSA, the event attracted prominent professionals from across Europe. Verena Ross, Chair of the European Securities and Market Authority (ESMA), delivered an illuminating introduction on MiCA and the benefits of a level playing field for industry operators. Dr. Christopher P. Buttigieg, Chief Officer Supervision at MFSA, provided invaluable insights from a Maltese perspective, whose VFA Act in 2018 was the world’s first comprehensive crypto-specific regulation.

The conference featured multiple panel discussions throughout the day, encompassing diverse areas of interest. Eminent speakers included Verena Ross, Sarah Gramberg, a Crypto-Assets specialist at the European Banking Authority (EBA), Kevin C. Piccoli from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) with insights from the USA, leaders from regulatory bodies across Europe, and notable figures from crypto giants who have set up operations in Malta—such as Mariana Gospodinova from Crypto.com, Fiorentina D’Amore from Bitpanda, and Robert Rutherford, Vice President of Operations at FalconX.
